One of my favorite gifts for children is real tools. Children love to have grown-up tools and to do grown-up work, especially if it means you are going to be right there with them. It can take years of working side by side with parents before a child is ready to work independently. Real tools, instead of just toys, give children the opportunity to be truly productive.
WINS: skill building, eye-hand coordination, independence, work ethic, problem solver, helpfulness, relationship, memories, builds confidence
Real hand tools that do real things (Click here) When a child reaches an age where it is safe to use real tools, invest in these instead of plastic toys. These real-life skills are fun and purposeful. Our children always had access to safe tools. Whenever I noticed a loose screw or something that needed to be measured, I asked the children to do it. Sure, I could do it faster, but the look on their faces when they felt the value of being able to solve the problem. Priceless.
A safer starter wooden set for little hands I strongly prefer real tools over toys, but for toddlers & preschoolers, I prefer sturdy wooden tools that actually do something. This set has tools that will build the same skills they can use later with real tools.
Measuring Tape My grandchildren love this and it doubles as part of my Marvelous Math adventure too.
Real Yard Tools just right for kid hands Children love real tools, especially if it comes along with real TIME spent working alongside their parents or grandparents.
Kids Size Wheelbarrow
Sturdy Kid Crane
Kid work gloves We had a big supply of these. They never seem to wear out. We lost a few, but they are made to last.
Kids gloves This option is lighter weight. Perfect for the garden, with more flexibility.
Kid size cleaning tools These are kid-sized but are real cleaning tools. I bought this for one of my granddaughter’s birthdays. When our own children were young, we usually bought the real things. We cut the handles of mops and brooms to be the right size. We even found a real, small vacuum cleaner that was just the right size. We kept a stock of small squirt bottles and sponges. Children can learn to enjoy cleaning when you do it together. For the youngest children, there was only water in their squirt bottles. They had fun being part of the process, but it was perfectly safe.
