Do you love a good story? I know I do, and I expect you do to. Why not? We were made for it. Stories bring facts to life and build connections. Stories connect us to one another and to people we have never even met. Stories tell us how things are, or were, or might be someday.
Have you ever noticed how children like to hear the same stories over and over. It might be a favorite book or it might be one of your own, “Pop Pop, tell the one about the train by the swimming hole when you were a little boy.” Children love these stories. Who am I kidding? I love these stories!
Grandparents, this one is for you. Parents, you can jump on this train too, but I’m talking to Mimi, Gigi, Grandma, Granny, MeMaw, and to Pops, Poppy, Grandpa, Gramps, PapPaw, and even to Grammo and Pop Pop (that’s us). Of course, I would be thrilled to hear that you have a stack of good books in your home and that your grand-children love for you to read to them. I would be delighted to know that you visit their homes and read books to them, but right here, right now, I am talking about something else.
Tell *your* stories. Tell the ones that introduce them to your parents, your childhood home, your 3rd grade teacher. If those are not stories you care to tell, then find other ones. Tell them the ones about the mistakes that helped you learn valuable lessons. Tell them the ones about someone who changed your life for the better. Tell them about the first time you looked in their eyes. Don’t over think it, just tell them.
They are waiting to hear it and they will never forget the story nor the time spent with you!
